- Twizzler Half-Life . In this activity, you will develop your understanding of half-life using licorice. Procedure. On the graph paper provided (see page 2), label the y-axis as “Amount” and the x-axis as “Half-Life.” Number the x-axis from 1 to 10. Place one piece of licorice on the y-axis. This is the original amount of radioisotope.
In this activity, learners build edible models of DNA, while learning basic DNA structure and the rules of base pairing. Learners construct the models out of licorice and colored marshmallows and create labels for the base pairs and backbone.
- The Twizzler lab is designed to introduce the topic and is best if used before the M&Mium lab. Primary Learning Outcomes Students will learn the concept of half-life and how it relates to radioactive material. Students will determine, with a hands-on experiment, the half-life of Twizzlers and a “radioactive” element, M&Mium.
